History
The rumba dance has a rich history that dates back to the Afro-Cuban musical traditions of the late 19th century. During this time, African slaves in Cuba would often gather together to play music and dance as a way of expressing themselves and celebrating their culture. Over time, these musical traditions evolved and blended with other styles to create the unique rhythms and sounds of the rumba. The first documented instance of the rumba dance was in the early 1900s when it was performed at Havana’s street parties and carnivals. The dance quickly spread throughout Cuba and eventually made its way to the United States and Europe, where it became a sensation in the 1920s and 1930s.
In the United States, the rumba was heavily influenced by jazz music, and many dancers incorporated new styles and movements into their routines. In Europe, the rumba became a popular dance form in ballrooms and was often performed in classical music. There are many different styles of rumba dance, each with its own unique movements and rhythms, but all share the same joyful spirit and infectious energy that has made it a cultural phenomenon for over a century. Despite these adaptations, the essence of the rumba dance remained the same: a celebration of life and love, expressed through the power of music and dance. The dance’s infectious rhythms and sensual movements continue to inspire dancers and audiences around the world, and it remains a beloved cultural tradition in Cuba and beyond.
Artwork Process
Our young and talented dancers from a local dance school, became our human brushes in this masterpiece, performing live in front of an audience at the restaurant 1902 in Milan. Their extensive training brought us stunning theatrical expressions that were captured on camera during their performance and did the Ruma justice. Each footprint was captured on a yellow base, representing the shining sun of Cuba, while other vivid colors such as violet and pink melted with the base color. Sanaz decided spontanesouly to add some gold glitter tempera to the artwork, resembling parts of our female dancer’s costume, which turned finally into a harmonious color mix.
While some areas show the dancers feet, other areas display partial prints in a breathtaking color composition. These minor details combined with the dynamic movements of our talented dancers, draw the audience closer to the artwork and capture their attention. The outcome is a unique artwork full of contrasts between vibrant base colors and delicate footsteps, leading to fascinating abstract patterns, which resemble a marriage of Yves Klein’s and Jackson Pollock’s masterpieces. The magic of dance and movement is captured and immortalized in this artwork, acting as a reminder of the simplest joys of life.
