History
The original artwork from the epic ballet Swan Lake is one of the most popular of all classical ballets. Ballet comes from the Italian word “Balletto” meaning little dance, originated in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, called the Renaissance (corresponding to Rinascimento in Italian, meaning “rebirth”), as a combination of social dance and choreographed display. Brought to France by Catherine de’ Medici in the 16th century, this dance developed into a theatrical stage dance. It was Louis XIV, the Sun King, who established the Royal Academy of Dance in 1661 and appointed his personal ballet master Pierre Beauchamp as its director, who codified the 5 main body positions, still used today. Through his collaborations with Jean-Baptiste Lully and Molière, he helped transform ballet into a grand spectacle and founded the Paris Opera Ballet in 1669. Ballet survived democratic revolutions and reforms that followed in France over the next century.
With the advent of the romantic movement fantasy and folklore themes became common routines, and though the influence of ballet in France would decline other countries such as Russia played a major role in the development of ballet. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a leading Russian composer of the late 19th century, whose works are notable for their melodic inspiration and their orchestration. He is regarded as the master composer of classical ballet, as demonstrated by his scores for Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. He composed Swan Lake in 1875, which was originally unsuccessful due to the complicated score and uninspiring choreography. However, Tchaikovsky died on 6 November 1893 and the show was amended in 1895 with a new direction and revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and approval from Tchaikovsky’s younger brother, Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Swan Lake tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.
Artwork Process
Our ballerina Adriana Garza Coeto, ballet dancer and teacher became our human brush in this masterpiece, performing live in front of an audience in the UK. Her theatrical expressions were captured on camera during her performance and did this dance justice. Each footprint was captured on a blue base, representing the lake in the first act of the ballet Swan Lake. Some footsteps show the dancer circling around the canvas, while others melt with the base color. Adriana our ballerina brought feathers with her, which she used as part of her performance. These randomly fell on the canvas and stuck to the tempera paint.
While some areas show the ballerina’s entire shoe, other areas display partial prints together with feathers in a breathtaking color composition. These minor details combined with the dynamic movements of our elegant ballerina, draw the audience closer to the artwork and capture their attention. The outcome is a unique artwork full of contrasts between vibrant base colors and delicate footsteps, leading to fascinating abstract patterns, which resemble a marriage of Yves Klein’s and Jackson Pollock’s masterpieces. The magic of dance and movement is captured and immortalized in this artwork, acting as a reminder of the simplest joys of life.
Art prints
The original artwork paired with its art prints, expands the creative horizon while nurturing artistic authenticity and minimalism. In addition to the original artwork on canvas, a set of photographic art prints can be acquired as stunning accompaniment, available in our shop and displayed behind acrylic glass. These so called contact sheets were created by capturing the footage of our dancer’s steps and movements, all shot through a video camera attached to a crane and later edited and chosen carefully in post-production. The award-winning photography shows living creations with movement, where each frame portrays the lifecycle of the artwork collection.
In one frame, you will see the dancer circling freely with her flowing skirt around the canvas, and in another, she is small and almost not to spot. These details draw the viewer immediately into the art and capture their attention. The contrast between the canvas’ vibrant colors and the dancer’s movement results in incredible design patterns, as well as dramatic and stunning visuals.
